With the exception of Ballina, all LGAs in the Northern Rivers have higher unemployment than the NSW average. Almost 9 out of 10 businesses in the region employ five or fewer people. While about 80% of businesses in the region have a website, only about a third of them receive orders online.
With grants from Regional Development Australia, the NSW State Training Services 2013 Strategic Skills Fund and NSW Trade and Investment’s ‘GoBroadband – Coffs Harbour and Northern Rivers Region’, RDA-NR developed this program in partnership with North Coast TAFE to:
- assist small businesses prepare for and participate in the digital economy at an affordable price; AND
- provide a pathway for job-seekers wanting to start their career as a digital business consultant (or employee) in the field of online marketing and eCommerce.
Almost 30 consultants graduated from 60 hours of training at North Coast TAFE in June, and many have been assisting small businesses to improve their digital presence since. They are skilled in building and updating WordPress websites (including WordPress eCommerce solutions), setting up MailChimp electronic mailings and managing social media activities including Facebook, twitter and LinkedIn. Some consultants have skills with other webtools and content management systems, depending on their past experience.
Digi-Advantage business partners
To date, 87 business placements have been registered and many are already completed. Small to medium business or not-for-profit organisation in the Northern Rivers that have been operating for at least 2 years, were able to apply to join the program as a business partner and receive assistance from one of our graduate consultants to improve their digital presence.
Placements were available in 20 hour blocks at the rate of $25 per hour (exc GST where applicable).
RDA-NR provides a 50% reimbursement, making the net cost to your business just $12.50 per hour.
