While positive steps are being made to support the startup ecosystem, Australia still has a lot of catching up to do. The report notes Australia is currently ranked 19th on the Global Innovation Index and declining. The highly mobile startup sector requires talent, capital and favourable regulatory environments and will move to locations that best support their growth.
Startups have the potential to contribute over $100 billion to GDP and create over half a million new jobs by 2033. As technology reaches across all sectors of the economy, Australia has an opportunity to engage in the creation of the companies that will disrupt global industries and reap the rewards.
