A thriving regional economy depends on the efficient movement of goods and people. On the Northern Rivers, strong freight connections are critical to the growth of our agricultural, manufacturing and food production industries.
The Northern Rivers is one of the most productive agricultural regions in Australia and maintaining that competitive advantage relied on efficient, low-cost transport and reliable supply chains. Significant infrastructure investments are delivering real improvements. The completion of the Pacific Highway upgrade up to the Queensland border has cut freight travel times and improved reliability along one of the nation’s busiest freight corridors connecting Sydney and Brisbane. Closer to home, the $150 million Northern Rivers Recovery and Resillience Program is securing critical freight links between Casino, the Mid Richmond and the Pacific Motorway.
Regional Transport
Regional transport is about more than frieght, it's about making sure people can reliably get to work, school, healthcare and each other. As the fastest-growing region in NSW, outside of metropolitan areas, and a popular tourism destination, the Northern Rivers is experiencing increased pressure on the region's roads, public transport and connectivity.
The North Coast Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan
The NSW Government’s draft North Coast Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan is a 20 year blueprint released in 2026 that sets out more than 50 initiatives to improve roads, rail, freight, bus services and active transport across the region. It responds directly to community feedback on the need for better connections, safer roads and more reliable travel options.

Strengthened public transport
From July 2026, a revitalised NSW TrainLink coach network is delivering more frequent and better connected services, including new and enhanced routes linking the Northern Rivers to the Gold Coast, Brisbane and other regional centres. This is supported by a 36% funding increase to the statewide coach network. Local bus services in centres such as Lismore, Ballina and Tweed Heads continue to be reviewed and improved to close gaps in coverage and frequency.
These upgrades reflect a coordinated, long-term commitment from state and federal government to build a more connected, resilient Northern Rivers. One that supports both the people who live here and the industries that depend on reliable access to move goods and workers.
